Boiling water makes it worse

Bathing with water that contains arsenic is not a significant health risk because arsenic is not readily absorbed through skin. Some ingestion of arsenic may occur when brushing your teeth. Although the amount ingested is minimal, using a clean source of water for brushing your teeth is advisable.

For private well owners or others testing for arsenic, the depth of the well and the well design can affect the presence of arsenic in the well water.

The Berkey Filter System works on gravity and is not connected to any water source. You add the water to the system via pitcher and the system produces 3 gallons an hour. The water is added by hand with the canister standing 20” Tall on the counter top. They do claim to reduce a number of contaminates, viruses, VOCs and such. I was unable to find any certification.


Cast Iron Pipes

Hundreds have cast iron water mains over 100 years old. Cast iron pipes used for waste piping, however, are subject to corrosive action that pipes carrying drinking water are not. The external rust, unless showing deep pitting, is common and probably not a concern.


Capacity:

Drinking Water Filter is approved at 750 gallons for the Aquaversa. Since we can count the number of gallons with the meter, we can insure up to 1200 gallons. It is still recommended the filter be changed once a year, if the flow slows or there is a change in taste or smell.


Capacity Meter:

The capacity meter $112.50 Increases filter capacity to 1200 for Aquaversa and 960 gal for Aquaperform

has two parts to it. There is an indicator light which is placed under the faucet. This blinks when the water is flowing to indicate the fullness of the filter. The meter itself is below the sink and connected with tubing between the Drinking Water System and the faucet. It counts the number of gallons which go through the system. It does not indicate when the filter needs to be changed, just the number of gallons used. It is still recommended you changed the filter once a year, if the flow slows or if there is a change in taste or smell.

Disinfection Byproducts (DBPs)

Disinfectants, such as chlorine and chloramines, which are used to kill microbes, form harmful byproducts (DBPs). Many of the DBPs have been found to cause potential health risks, including human cancers and birth and developmental defects.

Some 600 DBPs have been identified since 1974; however, scientists believe that represents only 50% of all DBPs that occur in chlorine-treated water and 17% of those occurring in chloraminetreated water. Of the identified DBPs, the toxicity is known for maybe 30%.

More than 90% of the population drink water that has been disinfected. The DBPs enter the water supply as it moves from the treatment plant through the distribution system to the kitchen tap.

Chemicals / Pesticides

More than 75,000 chemicals have been introduced to the environment over the past 60 years. And, the EPA has established national standards for fewer than 60 chemicals. Chemicals, pesticides, and herbicides have been linked to many diseases, including: cancers in humans; nervous system damage; liver problems; and reproductive problems.

Methyl-Tertiary-Butyl-Ether (MTBE)

Cryptosporidium & Giardia (Cysts)

These parasitic cysts are generally more resistant to disinfectants and are particularly harmful to persons with compromised immune systems. Cysts can be killed by boiling water or removed by filtration.

Lead

Water can pick up lead almost anywhere along the way from the treatment plant to the tap. Lead enters tap water through corrosion of plumbing materials. Lead in drinking water can cause a variety of adverse health effects when people are exposed to it at levels above the maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 15 ppb.

In babies and children, exposure to lead in drinking water can result in delays in physical and mental development; slight deficits in attention span; hearing problems, and learning disabilities. Adults who drink water contaminated with lead could develop high blood pressure.

Arsenic V

This naturally occurring toxin has been linked to several cancers and has been found to harm nerves, heart, and skin. Currently the EPA Standard for Arsenic V is 50 ppb. Water utilities have until 2006 to comply with EPA’s new standard of 10 ppb.

Faucet

The recommended flow rate is a quart in 20 seconds with the water pressure at 60 psi. The faucet usage should not matter as long at the connection is ¼”

Any butler style faucet with 1/4” tubing can be used with our Drinking Water systems.

The faucet stands 10 ½” tall with a 5 ½” reach.

You need a 1/2 in hole in the counter.

The faucet must be a low flow faucet.

The tubing is 1/4 in.

And you need a 12" clearance.

The faucet which we use with our system has a ¼” tubing and is a ceramic disc style. They can use any faucet as long as it has one line (Butler Style) and ¼” tubing.

The Brushed Nickel Faucet matches the stainless steel appliances the best. It has the least amount of shine.

Butler style faucet is used with a standalone faucet not the main line. If this will be a second faucet, then they can use this brand with a butler style faucet (One line only)

Filters:

Granular Activated filters GAC (most filters) contain loose granules of carbon, while carbon block activated carbon filters have solid blocks of compressed carbon. A major advantage of carbon block filters is that they allow for water to be in contact with carbon for a longer period, which leads to a better contaminant removal. The same cannot be said about GAC filters, Our filter absorbs chemicals. takes out the bacteria, chemical polutants, microscopic bacteria, particulant matter, heavy metal, lead mercury.

The CBTVOC is a product produced by us in a different division. We do not sell the replacement filter here. They will need to go to Best Filters at bestfilters.com. They will be able to get the replacement filters there.

We do make the CBVOCS(X) series systems for a different division. They are similar but different than the Multipure Drinking Water Systems. Multipure offers a 90-day return policy, Lifetime Warranty on the housing and replacement parts and filters. The parts for the two series are not interchangeable. We are certified with the NSF for our Drinking Water Systems. The companies which sell the CBVOC product have their own warranties and parts. Best Filters does sell the replacement filters for these Drinking Water Systems.


How do the Different Technologies Compare?

Carbon Block Filters

Multipure’s carbon block filters are considered to be the most effective method for reducing a wide range of contaminants of health concern as well as solving aesthetic problems. Multipure’s densely compacted carbon block filter mechanically intercepts particles as small as 0.5 micron (sub micron) as well as electrokinetically adsorbs particles. In addition, the carbon block filter has a large surface area for chemical adsorption to take place. The carbon block filter is a replaceable cartridge designed so that it can be easily changed. Some additional advantages of the carbon block filter are: it does not waste water; no electricity required; it does not remove beneficial minerals; and it does not add salt or silver to the water.

Granular Activated Carbon Filters (GAC)

GAC is only effective in trapping dirt, rust, sand and silt and removing objectionable tastes and odors. Water passes through a bed of loose carbon granules. Water can channel around the carbon instead of filtering through it.

Silver-Charcoal Filters (Bacteriostatic Filters)

Silver Nitrate, a known toxin, is added to a GAC filter to inhibit growth of heterotrophic bacteria; however, its effectiveness is questionable.

Reverse Osmosis (RO)

RO devices effectively reduce suspended and dissolved matter from water, including minerals which are essential to good health. RO systems do not remove all bacteria or chemicals. This process is very slow and may not filter as much water as you need at a time. The device may take up most of the space under your sink. RO can be expensive to maintain, requiring several separate replacement filters per year. An activated carbon filter usually accompanies an RO system.

Ceramic Filters

These devices are designed for mechanical filtration only. Ceramic filters do not reduce or remove any chemicals, pesticides, or herbicides, disinfection byproducts, or dissolved heavy metals.

Distillation

Much like Reverse Osmosis, Distillation removes all minerals. Distillers boil water and recondense the water vapor. This process is ineffective at reducing chemicals because they also vaporize along with the water. Distillation can only produce a few gallons of treated water a day. Distillation also uses a lot of electricity, making it an expensive process.

MP vs Aquasauna

The wording on the Aquasana is a little misleading here, notice how they say “has the ability to reduce…”, not that it does reduce. I’m guessing that the carbon blocks in the Aquasource have the ability to reduce VOCs etc., but we don’t claim it because we don’t have any test data to support it (we’ve never tested it). We too use high grade coconut shell carbon, but ours is compressed into a block – the Aquasana has granular carbon.

I’m guessing the micron rating for the Aquasource is about 25-50 microns. Any smaller than that and we’re risking reducing the flow rate of water throughout the whole house.

They do not give a capacity for pesticides, herbicides and solvents. This is likely due to the (probably) low performance for these specific contaminants.

Aesthetic Effects (NSF Standard No. 42)

A drinking water treatment system may be certified under Standard 42 if the system aesthetically improves the water. This includes the reduction of chlorine, chloramine, and particulate reduction.

Chlorine Reduction

A device can be certified for chlorine reduction by meeting the minimum level of reduction required by the NSF standard, which is only 10%. Be sure to check the literature to determine how much chlorine is reduced by the device.

Particulate Reduction

Several classes are used to define the level of particulate reduction, ranging from Class VI for those devices removing coarse particulates of 50 micrometers and larger to Class I for drinking water treatment units that reduce the smallest (sub-micron) particles (0.5 to 1.0 micron).

Health Effects (NSF Standard No. 53)

NSF tests and certifies under this standard if a filter system reduces a significant amount of a specific harmful contaminant from drinking water. Such hazardous contaminants may be microbiological (including filterable cysts), chemical (including DBPs, pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides), or particulate in nature. NSF may certify that a drinking water treatment unit may be effective in controlling one or more of the health effects contaminants. By carefully reviewing the performance data sheet for a product, you will be able to determine whether the device is effective in reducing many pollutants or just a few.

Reverse Osmosis (NSF Standard No. 58)

The Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology is tested and certified under Standard 58. RO devices effectively reduce certain heavy metals, salts, and inorganics, including healthful, naturally-occurring minerals. Contaminants extracted through the Reverse Osmosis process are returned to the water supply. The process is slow and wastes about 3 to 4 gallons for every one gallon of water produced.

Distillation (NSF Standard No. 62)

NSF Standard 62 was developed for the Distillation technology which works very slowly and uses a lot of electricity. Water is heated to boiling and turns to vapor, leaving inorganic contaminants, including healthful minerals, behind. Chemicals evaporate along with the water and then recondense into a liquid state in the distilled water.


Perchlorate

The most common use of perchlorate is in ammonium perchlorate, which is a major ingredient of rocket fuels. Perchlorate is also used to make flares, explosives, blasting agents, fireworks, and military munitions such as grenades.

Pollution can change a water's pH, which in turn can harm animals.

While the ideal pH level of drinking water should be between 6-8.5, the human body maintains pH equilibrium on a constant basis and will not be affected by waterconsumption. For example, our stomachs have a naturally low pH level of 2 which is a beneficial acidity that helps us with food digestion.

The pH value is a good indicator of whetherwater is hard or soft.

If the pH of water is too high or too low, aquatic organisms living within it will die.

We don’t make contaminant claims on the whole house system because so much of that water used goes down the drain/toilet, and it would be a waste of resources to filter all of that water to drinking water quality (like with a regular Multipure system). The Aquasource’s primary function is to take out chlorine, taste & odor, dirt & sediment.

Wholehouse Systems Aquasource (reduces chlorine and particulates) does produce 10 to 12 gallons with a 5O micron wrapper. They are not certified as of yet and do reduce pressure. Reduce presence of contaminants while pressure is maintained. Stainless steel 35"hX16"d 120 lbs.

The MP750SI

system does not come with any service parts. It is intended for use with a refrigerator or insta-hot. Soft water... is treated water in which the only ion is sodium.

As rainwater falls, it is naturally soft. However, as water makes its way through the ground and into our waterways, it picks up minerals like chalk, lime and mostly calcium and magnesium. Since hard water contains essential minerals, it is sometimes the preferred drinking water. Not only because of the health benefits, but also the flavor. On the other hand, soft water tastes salty and is sometimes not suitable for drinking. So why, then, do we soften our water?

Studies also suggest that hard water can cause an increase in eczema in children. This is because the minerals in hard water can dry out skin and hair.

Hard water can be “softened” by reducing the concentration of calcium, magnesium and other minerals. Temporary hardness of water can be treated either by boiling it or by adding lime (calcium hydroxide).

Other than boiling the water or using hard water descaler, lime or washing soda can also be used to soften hard water.

In this method, lime is added to large water containers and the water is left to stand for a number of days before it can be used. The water is then drawn from the top of the containers.

Water softeners have a separate brine tank that uses common salt to create this brine solution. In normal operation, hard water moves into the mineral tank and the calcium and magnesium ions move to the beads, replacing sodium ions.

Well Water

The Reverse Osmosis is not really helpful with for well water. It will remove the minerals (not sulfur) and wastes water since it take 3 to 5 gallons to make one gallon of reverse osmosis water.

We usually recommend the customer have two filter and change them when the sulfur smell comes.

If your water comes from your own well, the U.S. EPA advises that you test it annually, especially if you see signs of trouble like corroded pipes, strange odors or stained laundry. Your municipality, county or state health department may offer free or low-cost testing services; otherwise, you can use a laboratory certified in your state. For further information on well water quality, the EPA suggests consulting nonprofit groups like the American Ground Water Trust (www.agwt.org).
